My two favorite meals of the day are breakfast and dinner, primarily because they the are only two meals I eat. Baking all day doesn’t lend itself to enjoying a full lunch, so I try to fill the void with snacks such as bananas, peaches, almonds and peanuts. But one of my favorites snacks is trail mix. You get protein from the nuts and sugar from the dried fruit and chocolate pieces (who doesn’t love that!). But what about the carbs? Typical trail mix seems to be missing a carbohydrate element, so given that we are baking up whole grains all day long, I decided to try making a trail mix with our granola.
Though you can use any granola you’d like in your trail mix, having a variety that is clustered goes a long way in adding a crunch and giving it substance. Our native berry granola is more clustered than our other varieties, so I’d recommend using this as your trail mix base. As for the trail mix fixings, that is entirely up to you. The recipe below provides the foundation for any trail mix. You can substitute any nut or dried fruit you’d like, but I would keep the ratios the same.
Granola Factory Trail Mix
Yield: 5 1/4 cup trail mix
- 2 cups Native Berry Granola
- 3/4 cup M&M candies
- 1/2 cup tart cherries
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup yogurt covered raisins
- 1/2 cup peanuts, salted & roasted
- 1/2 cup almonds, salted & roasted
Combine all the ingredients into a medium mixing bowl and mix with two large spoons. Package in a mason jar or zip-loc bags and keep in your pantry for up to four weeks.
